Oh gawd, these columns get harder and harder to do. It’s a miracle this column has run for around four years considering how useless Villa have tended to be. How can you spin anything positive from an inept 4-0 defeat at the Etihad? Well, the fact of the matter is you can’t.

Manchester City paraded the League Cup around the stadium as if reminding Aston Villa fans what their club used to be about. Just when you thought failing to beat a second division Bradford City in a League Cup semi-final over two legs in the competition was as low as you could go as a Villa fan, this season has reached a whole new other level.

While we wait for the relegation axe to drop, here’s five reasons to be cheerful (kind of…not really) as an Aston Villa supporter…

1. Thinking Positivity

When asked after the final whistle against Manchester City if Villa could stay up, Remi Garde suggested they could.

“Until the end, I will believe we can do it but we have to be realistic,” Garde told the BBC.

“If we play like we did in the first half here, we have a chance. If we play like we did in the second half, we have no chance.”

I appreciate his positive sentiment, but if we played like we did in the first half, we might pick up the odd draw, but that would be about it. The team had one shot on target in the whole game and little possession.

The stark reality of Villa’s season is they are now winless in 14 Premier League away games, one short of Villa’s Premier League record (15 in December 2003). Also, only two teams in Premier League history have had fewer than 16 points after 29 games (Sunderland in 2005-06 and Derby in 2007-08 – both 10).

In short, the only REAL positive way to think about this season is that there are only nine games of this misery to go.
