Aston Villa Confirm Lucas Digne Transfer With Replacement Lined Up

Aston Villa have confirmed that Lucas Digne has completed a permanent transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, while the deal for his replacement is thought to be close to completing: Villa and Atlético Madrid have reportedly agreed a €20m fee for left-back Matteo Ruggeri.

Villa’s statement confirmed the mechanics that had been reported for weeks: PSG triggered the €10m release clause in Digne’s contract, and he has signed a three-year deal at his new club. The move is a homecoming in more ways than one. Digne came through the Lille academy before playing for PSG between 2013 and 2016, and leaves Villa Park as a European trophy winner to join one.

The club also set out the scale of what Villa are losing. Digne joined from Everton in January 2022 and leaves having made 182 appearances in claret and blue, scoring four goals and registering 24 assists. He was a key part of the side that won the Europa League last season, before helping France reach the semi-finals of this summer’s World Cup.

Villa’s statement struck a warm note to go with the numbers: “A consummate professional, who was highly regarded by his fellow players and staff alike, Lucas leaves Aston Villa with the very best wishes of everyone at the football club.”

The Squad Building Logic

None of that changes the financial logic underneath the move. An €10m fee for a 33-year-old, however well regarded, is Villa moving him on while there is still a buyer willing to pay for him at all, and it clears one of the higher wages in the building, reportedly around £135,000 a week. Digne also lived in London throughout his time at Villa rather than in the Midlands, commuting in for training and matches so his children could attend a French-speaking school; the move back to France suits his family life as much as it suits Villa’s accounts.

Digne could potentially line up against Villa in the Super Cup final on Wednesday evening in Salzburg, if PSG put the people work in time. PSG can make additions to their squad right up to 23:59 CET the day before the match, provided the French FA confirms in writing that any new addition is eligible to play at domestic level.

Replacing a Europa League Winner With a Younger One

Villa’s response to the gap he leaves has not been to scramble. According to Fabrizio Romano and other reports, Villa and Atlético Madrid have agreed a €20m deal for Ruggeri, with the Italian left-back giving the move his own green light and personal terms now being negotiated. “A few more steps are needed” before it can be signed off, in Romano’s words, but the deal looks to be heading for completion.

Ruggeri, 24, arrives with pedigree of his own. Before his move to Atlético, he started in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 Europa League final, a European final won at senior level before he had turned 23. It gives Villa a left-back who has already delivered on the exact stage Digne completed his Villa career at.
