With the low-key German tour done-and-dusted, the preseason started in earnest with an away day to Wycombe Wanderers. Interestingly Lambert certainly isn’t taking the glamourous route of Asian or American preseason trips. With Aston Villa’s preseason fixture list serving up the likes of Wycombe, Luton, Newport and Crewe, it means Aston Villa away days for supporters will have a grass roots feel to them. The trip to Wycombe Wanderers from the pre-match entertainment and the paying on the turnstiles, almost made you feel Sky TV hadn’t come along and created the ‘modern game’.
