Season’s Expectations
MOMS has been running the annual My Old Man Said survey over the past few weeks to get supporters’ views on various issues.
While the survey is still open – please complete survey here – if you haven’t already, we’ve run a few sneaks at the results so far.
The first was a look at what Villa fans really thought about Steve Bruce in the face of this alleged ‘mass hysteria’ on social media.
Now with Villa moving up to 9th in the league after back-to-back wins, we look at Villa supporter’s early season expectations to how this season will finish.
There’s only one mission this season and that’s promotion, which is simply essential for the development of Villa and Tony Xia’s plans, so where do Villa supporters think the team are going to finish?
Season Finish Survey
For starters, only 1% of 400 fans that answered the question think that Villa will finish as they did last season, in the lower half of the league table and no fans are understandably expecting relegation.
The most popular vote is that Villa are play-off bound with over half of the supporters surveyed, 55.9% calling it.
With the money Villa have spent and some of the names we’ve managed to attract, many in the media expected Villa to be favourites for the title or at least automatic promotion.
Supporters have certainly been a lot more coy than that, having a better understanding of the dynamics of Villa and how things have been going recently.
Only 11.4% of Villa supporters predicted Villa to finish in 2nd spot, while just 2.3% think we’ll end up as the champions.
So a total of 13.7% are expecting automatic promotion.
29.4% of fans are expecting mid-table misery and to finish in a current position to where they current sit in the league.
Certainly, Villa will have to start playing a lot better to ensure the results to prevent this happening.
Last Season Comparison
Certainly the results are more conservative compared to last season, when 22.9% predicted Villa to finish runners-up and 13.2% hoped to win the title.
With more fans expecting automatic promotion, fans expecting the play-offs was slightly lower than this season at 42.5%.
Only 2.2% predicted Villa would finish in the lower half, although you could say that the 18.8% who said Villa would finish mid-table were also correct about what ended up happening when the 2016/17 season closed.
So, lets say 21% of fans called it correctly last season.
So far this season, the way Villa are playing, the play-offs look the most likely eventuality, as they’ll certainly need to up their game in terms of how they’ve performed so far, to snag the preferred automatic promotion spots.
