The Danger to Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League Ambitions

Aston Villa vs Brighton Preview Show – The Seagull Threat

It’s do-or-die time for Aston Villa when it comes to snatching the last available European place. Three teams are in contention, and Villa, thanks to their four-point haul against Spurs and Liverpool in their last two games, now find themselves deservedly in pole position. On the final day, they simply need to match or surpass the results of Spurs and Brentford to qualify for UEFA’s third-tier competition, the Europa Conference League.

However, on Sunday, Villa’s main concern won’t be Spurs or Brentford. Instead, it lies in the unpredictable threat posed by Brighton. Roberto De Zerbi’s team has had some erratic results while trying to qualify for the Europa League. They suffered heavy defeats against relegation battlers Nottingham Forest and Everton, yet managed to defeat both Manchester United and Arsenal, who have qualified for the Champions League.

The question is, which Brighton will show up at Villa Park?

De Zerbi’s team has had an exceptional season, achieving their best-ever finish in the top tier and securing the Europa League spot their manager had aimed for (he even stepped onto the Amex pitch after their last home game to express their desire for the Europa League rather than the Conference League). Their squad is brimming with young talent, so rotation doesn’t necessarily weaken them, as proven by their recent draw against Manchester City.

As we discuss on the latest episode of the My Old Man Said podcast, the final installment of the Something for the Weekend series this season, there doesn’t appear to be a weak Brighton team, so don’t expect the Seagulls to be relaxing on the beach.
