Emery Fails to Crack the Glasner Code, as Forest Beat Villa

Emery Has a Bad Day at the Office Against Forest

Aston Villa hosted Nottingham Forest at Villa Park in the Premier League, looking for a first league win of the season. The game came off the back of Villa’s first win of their Champions League campaign, a 3-2 victory away at Club Brugge, which Unai Emery will be looking to build off the momentum of.

In the background of the game lurked the spectre of Unai Emery’s record against the latest Forest manager, Oliver Glasner. While he’s managed Villa, Emery has faced Glasner eight times now – seven of the encounters when Glasner’s was at Crystal Palace – and has never won, losing six. No manager has played Emery more often and stayed unbeaten.

Whether it is something that influenced Emery’s thinking during the game remains unclear, but certainly it was enough, when added to the absence of Joao Gomes, to make two of the three MOMS pools panel verdicts not to predict a home win on the last My Old Man Said podcast show.

The MOMS post-mortem show for the game will drop on Sunday, but in the meantime you can catch-up on MOMS thoughts on Forest under new manager Oliver Glasner, his back-three system and Emery’s kryptonite in the latest main show of the podcast below.

In the show, we also look at the distance-covered numbers that explain why Boubacar Kamara got substituted for Ross Barkley in Europe, and the ongoing case of George Hemmings starting ahead of three considerably more expensive summer signings.

While the three points include Manchester City’s baffling influencer-marketing push and a non-league goalkeeper who’s about to become an actual king.
