Covering for Ross Barkley
After a late win against Wolves followed their postponed Newcastle game, Aston Villa carried on life without Ross Barkley by going unbeaten for December before Christmas Day with a 0-0 draw against Burnley and a win at West Brom.
Villa now boast the highest average shots per game tally of the whole Premier League. Couple that with the fact Villa have recorded clean sheets in their last three games and you have the foundations for a successful team.
The Christmas period of games will no doubt tell us more, as Barkley finally returns to the action.
In this catch-up My Old Man Said podcast show we discuss both the Burnley and West Brom games, whilst looking at other footballing issues like the five sub rule failing to get the vote, Big Sam’s return to the Premier League and Robert Lewandowski winning FIFA player of the year.

This is only my opinion but El Ghazi and Traore stood up really well in the absence of Barkley and Trezeguet and I wouldnt change anything for Palace, see how it goes and maybe bring Barkley on later. On the subject of signings I think we definitely need to look at a striker option to give cover for Watkins in case of injury, and again personally I don’t think Josh King is good enough for us I think we need to aim higher, but I do agree that Edouard is too pricy. Just seen that Lampard is putting 7 players including Barkley up for sale so maybe we should consider starting negotiations with a view to a permanent move for him .
The whole team performing brilliantly getting better every game looking forward to Palace at ours.
