Last week, Aston Villa submitted their Premier League squad list for the 2020/21 season, which threw up a few points of interest.
Missing the Cut
First up was the absence of Henri Lansbury, who despite playing in the League up earlier in the season, missed out. While he made a notable corner assist for Jack Grealish’s volley against Burton in the cup, the midfielder did very little else to convince Dean Smith, he was worth including in his Premier League plans.
The midfielder’s omission from the squad list, hints at Villa expecting Lansbury to move on, and an eventual failure in the player finding a new club, at the back end of the transfer window.
Lansbury could now potentially have his contract terminated by mutual consent, if a deal can be reached. He’s current wage package was always going to make it difficult when it came to selling the player, as the last window proved, as he won’t command a similiar wage elsewhere.
The ex-Forest man missing the cut this season, clearly points to an upgrade in the Villa squad, although there is clearly room for further improvement by the fact there is four senior goalkeepers in the list of 25. The fact that Villa couldn’t get even a loan suitor for Lovre Kalinic in the latest transfer window, will be a concern in terms of the prospects of getting him off the wage bill.
Young Guns
Overall, Villa will be happy there is minimal ‘deadwood’ compared to previous seasons, and they’ll take heart from the start to the season of what is the Premier League’s youngest team. Dean Smith’s team an average age of 24.9.
Each Premier League squad contains no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the “Home Grown Player” (HGP) criteria.
A “Home-Grown Player” means a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).
The rest of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be “Home Grown”.
The club can also register Under-21 players, who are eligible over and above the squad limit of 25 players.
