Ibrahim Mbaye Completes Villa Switch: The Deal, Why He Left and Potential Upside

Aston Villa Complete Ibrahim Mbaye Deal

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth €55m. The Senegal international, 18, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, with Villa holding the option to extend it by a further year, and takes the No 19 shirt. PSG are reported to also have retained a 10 per cent sell-on clause on any future profit Villa make on the player.

The fee sits at the top end of what Villa had planned for. They had tracked Mbaye’s rise through PSG’s academy since as early as January, with the player’s parents visiting Bodymoor Heath earlier in the summer (see X post below). Villa saw off interest from RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Liverpool along the way, and it’s Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris’s own relationship with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that’s said to have done much of the work getting it over the line.

Mbaye passed a medical over the weekend and was present at Villa Park to watch Villa’s opening home game of the season against Arsenal. He will be in contention to make his league debut this weekend away at Hull City. A reunion with his old side follows quickly enough, with Villa welcoming PSG to Villa Park on matchday six of the Champions League, on 8 December.

Why is Mbaye Moving?

It’s an unusual move for a player who joined PSG’s academy at 10 and leaves eight seasons later with a trophy cabinet that already runs to two Ligue 1 titles, two Champions League triumphs, a domestic cup and a pair of European Super Cup wins, but PSG’s own business this summer made the decision for him. The arrivals of Ferran Torres, Mika Godts and Maghnes Akliouche pushed Mbaye further down the pecking order than his talent probably warranted, and away from the regular football his development needed.

Mbaye had just 1,002 minutes of Ligue 1 football last season, returning three goals and two assists in 10 starts and 14 substitute appearances, with his Champions League involvement thinner still: one start in four appearances from PSG’s 17 games in the competition. He didn’t get off the bench when PSG beat Villa in the Super Cup in Salzburg.

That thin recent involvement sits oddly against how experienced Mbaye already is at the top level for someone his age. He started away at Barcelona in the Champions League last October, a 2-1 win in a stadium most 17-year-olds only get to watch on television, and was part of the squad through PSG’s run to the Club World Cup final. The player being squeezed out of Paris this season is the same one Luis Enrique trusted with some of the club’s biggest occasions barely a year ago.

Emery’s Mbaye Plans

Unai Emery has wanted a fast, right-sided forward capable of running beyond a defence rather than simply hugging the touchline. Known more for his inside build-up play rather than crossing, he’s perhaps less of an old-fashioned winger. It is also a position of genuine need, one that has gone unfilled since Leon Bailey’s decline, with John McGinn covering there for long spells despite never being a natural fit.

Mbaye is still a teenager, still raw, with plenty to prove at the top level. But the right-sided role he’s been brought in for isn’t peripheral to Emery’s system; it’s central to it, and there’s a route to Mbaye becoming the clearest version yet of what that position should look like under him. His acceleration, his fearlessness in possession and the World Cup goal against France that introduced him to a wider audience are exactly the kind of upside a genuine rebuild should be chasing: not a repeat of the side that won the Europa League, but Emery 2.0, better than the one before it.
