Aston Villa’s Summer Reality Check: UEFA, Rogers and the Transfer Window Truth

Aston Villa’s Summer Reality Check

Aston Villa are currently sitting in a docile state when it comes to squad building for the 2026/27 season. Player holidays are in full-swing, the World Cup is on, and the June 30th end to Villa’s financial year means you’re not going to see any activity before then.

While you can afford to relax a bit and ignore the transfer clickbait (for at least another week), pre-season friendlies have formed on the horizon, there’s a Super Cup to be won, and we know the Premier League fixtures, well, until Sky Sports changes them again.

The latest My Old Man Said podcast main show episode we catch up with all the latest Villa news – there’s a positive update on Boubacar Kamara, Villa’s key FIFA appeal, progress on Aston train stations, a look at the Premier League fixtures and more.

The Three Points section covers everything from FIFA causing a hotel crisis with a “vacuum of availability” in World Cup host cities to the pitch that caused Kamara’s injury being under the spotlight.

Emery’s Clipboard has a World Cup theme and focusing on Villa’s English player’s impact on the Premier League.

In the main section of the show, we look at the often forgotten UEFA financial settlement — year two of three — that has not gone away. Most Villa fans understand there is something called PSR that clubs have to navigate. What is less well understood is that UEFA operates its own separate set of rules, and those rules are considerably harder. This is the lens through which everything happening this summer has to be read: the Rogers noise, the Martinez whispers, the quiet on incoming signings.

  1. It’s silly season. Speculation rife and baseless. I’ll only believe anything when it happens. Villa are in a very healthy state financially.
This is just more clickbait…And I fell for it!!

    • Er…Bob, it’s a post for a podcast episode that discusses the UEFA settlement that Villa have to comply to, that dictates what they can do in the summer transfer window. You know, a discussion on the factual reality of the lay of the land. I think you got a bit excited there.
