Why the £30 Away Ticket Cap Still Matters – its Positive Effect

Premier League Away Ticket £30 Cap Renewed

As we gear up for a new season, MOMS will be covering a few things that have happened over the past couple of months that impact supporters, to make sure you’re up to speed.

In football increasingly, good news for supporters is when something stays the same as the previous season. In terms of Villa’s ticketing for 2025/26, it came in the form of a price freeze of youth concessions and the club standing down from considering to introduce an ‘arrangement fee’ (aka price rise) for over a third of Villa supporters who pay their season tickets monthly interest free.

There was other ‘good news’ to come for Villa away supporters. Back in June, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to maintain the £30 cap on away ticket prices for the 2025-26 season. This marks the 10th consecutive campaign the cap has been in place, and since its introduction, attendances at away games have seen a remarkable rise, increasing from 82% to 91%.

Origins of the Away Ticket Cap

The current competition-wide cap on away ticket prices was introduced at the start of the 2016-17 season. This followed sustained campaigning by supporters across the country (including MOMS), led by the Football Supporters’ Federation (one of the FSA’s predecessors), under the “Twenty’s Plenty” banner.

During the 2024-25 season, an impressive 953,420 people attended the 380 top-flight matches.

A Premier League statement acknowledged the additional costs associated with fans following their teams throughout the season and the incredible atmospheres they create at matches.

Prior to the 2024-25 season, 19 of the Premier League’s 20 clubs raised their ticket prices. In response, the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) launched a campaign called ‘Stop Exploiting Loyalty’.

The campaign garnered support through various protests, and the FSA even wrote to the Premier League, urging the organisation to implement a division-wide ticket price freeze for the upcoming season.

It’ll now be interesting to see, if the £30 cap will be extended further and for multiple years. Rapidly increasing home ticket prices in the Premier League have now started the conversion of a home ticket cap too.
