Unai Emery Hints at Villa Winger January Exit

Unai Emery Discusses Villa Winger’s Future

As the January transfer window approaches, the future of Jaden Philogene at Aston Villa is under the spotlight. Despite showing flashes of potential, Philogene’s limited impact this season has left both fans and the club wondering whether a move – temporary or permanent -might be in his best interests.

Leon Bailey Competition

Brought in to ultimately provide competition for Leon Bailey, Philogene was expected to push the Jamaican winger and raise standards on Villa’s right flank. However, this dynamic hasn’t panned out as planned. Bailey’s form has noticeably dipped this season, and the lack of consistent pressure from Philogene may have contributed to the drop-off. It’s a far cry from last season, when Bailey had to fend off competition from Moussa Diaby, keeping him sharp and motivated.

Philogene in 2024/5

Philogene has made 11 Premier League appearances, starting just twice, with a total of 324 minutes under his belt – more than Ian Maatsen, Tyrone Mings, and Emi Buendía, though each has been sidelined for other reasons. While he’s featured in important matches, including against Bayern Munich and Manchester United, Villa’s frustration with his output is clear. However, MOMS understands he’s been progressing in training recently, suggesting there’s more to come in the second half of the season, whether it’s at Villa or elsewhere.

“There are a lot of clubs interested in him because they believe as well in his potential.” – UNAI Emery

Unai Emery’s recent comments in the press conference before the Leicester City game, reflected the mixed feelings surrounding Philogene’s situation.

“He has potential. He didn’t show his potential the first six months being here with us, but for different circumstances,” reflected Emery. “He played minutes, he played some important matches like against Bayern Munich and Manchester United.”

While Emery emphasised his belief in Philogene’s potential, he admitted a January move could be on the table.

Current January Transfer Situation

“We are not close [to a move]. As a coach, I am not really wanting to let him leave, but we are speaking about the different options, and maybe [that] could be one option for him,” Emery explained. The manager also noted strong interest from other clubs, saying, “There are a lot of clubs interested in him because they believe as well in his potential.”

Philogene’s story at Villa has been one of patience and untapped promise. Emery has urged the winger to remain focused on development, saying, “My conversation always with him before was to be patient, take time to improve things.” Yet with his limited role in the squad and Bailey’s ongoing struggles, the January window presents a chance to reset – for both the player and the club.

Villa fans have seen glimpses of Philogene’s ability, but his inconsistency has prevented him from truly making his mark. If he stays, there’s hope he can continue to improve and push Bailey to rediscover his best form. If he moves, whether on loan or permanently, the regular game time could help him fulfil the potential Emery and other clubs clearly see in him. Also, a permanent move would potentially help Villa fund a January signing to sign a more dynamic attacker for the here and now.

As Emery succinctly put it, “For January, it could be one option for him or for the club to let him leave.”

Whether Philogene remains at Villa or embarks on a new challenge, this January will likely shape the next chapter of his career – and while he’s a bit part player now, it could have ripple effects on Villa’s broader attacking dynamic.
