Steven Gerrard in Survival Battle for Villa Future
In the first 45 minutes against Chelsea at Villa Park, there was a glimpse of potential salvation for Steven Gerrard. Villa had Chelsea on the back foot and created multiple big chances, and threatened to reverse the cheap early goal they conceded. A five-game unbeaten run, including games against Manchester City and Chelsea, could have been spun as encouraging signs of a potential turnaround.
The unbeaten run though, went up in flames. It was the familiar Villa story of recent seasons – great work undone with sloppy mistakes. Parts of the Villa Park crowd used the result as an opportunity to call time on Gerrard’s reign, but he hasn’t gone yet, despite some made-up stories that circulated.
As we look back on the My Old Man Said podcast at the recent game against Chelsea and Gerrard’s position – is this more than just a Steven Gerrard problem? Bar a 10-game winning run in the Championship and a play-off final, the club have been a non-entity in English football for far too long. The last decade has been largely depressing for supporters. Do the current owners need to do a hard reset, if they are to have any chance of matching the often advertised ambition and continuous improvement?
We discuss the current situation in depth, as well as catch up with the latest Villa news, Three Points, Media Muppets and Reasons to be Cheerful.
