Diego Carlos Injury Situation
There’s growing concern that the injury centre-back Diego Carlos suffered in Aston Villa’s 2-1 win against Everton at Villa Park – ironically in the final seconds of injury-time – is potentially serious.
Despite earning Aston Villa’s first win of the season, Steven Gerrard looked decidedly downbeat with the injury obviously occupying his immediate thoughts.
“I’m extremely happy about the win and the performance,” Gerrard told reporters, “but if we happen to lose someone who is so important to us, that could tarnish the win.”
“I’m extremely worried about the situation,” added, the Villa boss. “We’re going to send him for MRI scan, but it doesn’t look good right now.”
Supporters could see after Carlos got to his feet after initially being treated at the end of the game, he fell back down to the ground wincing in pain, before being helped off the pitch. If there’s anything typically Villa, it’s winning their first game of the season, at the cost of losing their new £26 million centre-back for several months, after he’s only made a couple of Premier League appearances.
After the long-term injury that fellow countryman Wesley suffered, effectively ending his time at Villa and potentially his career at Premier League level, Villa haven’t had much luck with their Brazilian transfers.
Covering Carlos Absence
When the Villa Head Coach was questioned about the potential of any transfer activity while the window is still open, Gerrard did seem to connect Carlos’s injury with it.
“Whilst the window is open you the never say never,” he said. “We’ll have to wait and see what the outcome is of Diego Carlos’s injury.”
After spending big on Carlos, who had also been brought in partly to cover Ezri Konsa’s injury (which he seemed to then recover from several weeks ahead of schedule), would the club really spend big again on yet another centre-back? It’s unlikely, but of course, it’s pointless speculating until there’s a clearer picture on Carlos’s injury.
Villa do have Kortney Hause returning from a knee injury, so they could maintain his services to have four fit centre-backs in the squad. It was thought, due to Carlos’s arrival, Villa would move him on this window.
Hause did sign a new contract under Gerrard back in January, so it’s not as if he’s regarded as deadwood at the club.
Fingers crossed for Carlos.
