The Daily Mail today reported that Manchester United have actioned their option to extend Sam Johnstone’s by a season to 2019.
The Aston Villa loanee’s contract originally ran to June 2018, but with his stock now boosted by an impressive start to this season with Villa, it was expected that United would exercise their one-year extension option.
Johnstone has nine clean sheets to his name this season and has been one of Villa’s most consistent performers. The keeper is currently in the Top 5 of the MOMS Aston Villa Player Power Rankings.
Naturally, his mother club wouldn’t want to lose the player on a free at the end of this season, so it will safeguard them a fee, if they are willing to let him move on.
Villa have made noises in the respect of wanting to sign Johnstone outright, but will more than likely have to gain promotion to have a realistic chance, as the keeper will be a viable option for Premier League clubs next season.
