Making Sense of Pau Torres Joining Aston Villa

First Impressions of Pau Torres Signing for Villa

He’s not quite through the door yet, but once he returns from his holiday break and his recent wedding, Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres will rejoin his former manager Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

“I’ve been a coach in Sevilla, PSG, Arsenal and I’ve never seen a centre-back like Pau Torres,” said Unai Emery, of Torres, back in 2021, after they had won the UEFA Europa League together. “I think he’s going to play at the highest level.”

Well, welcome to Villa Park!

OK, Villa aren’t quite there at the highest level yet, but there is no doubt that’s where Unai Emery and the club’s owners are pointing the club to go.

Last season, Emery swiftly fashioned Villa into a formidable team that was good enough to beat perhaps any team in the Premier League, bar the top two. They quickly gained the status of being a team that any opposition knew were in for a difficult game against. The acquisition of both Youri Tielemans and Torres will only enhance that reputation further.

Naturally, there’s potential further transfers to come in this window. Also, if they’re still around next season, Emery may get another level out of the likes of Emi Buendia and Leon Bailey, in the same way he’s turned around the likes of McGinn, Luiz, Mings and Watkins.

In the latest My Old Man Said podcast, we give our first impressions of the Torres transfer and the likely ramifications it will have on Villa’s current centre-back partnership of Tyrone Mings and Ezra Konsa, that thrived last season, plus the returning £30m man Diego Carlos.

We also catch up on all the other latest Villa news, the Three Points and look at some potential big twists and turns in the Europa Conference League, before it even gets going.
