Just How Bad is Aston Villa’s Boxing Day Record in the Premier League?

Aston Villa’s Boxing Day Record

Forget the Nightmare Before Christmas—when it comes to festive fixtures, it’s the day after Christmas that fills Aston Villa fans with the most dread. Villa’s recent 3-0 collapse against Newcastle United marked their fourth consecutive Boxing Day defeat, adding yet another chapter to their unimpressive Premier League-era record.

Villa have managed just five wins in their 26 Boxing Day matches since the Premier League began in the 1992/93 season. That translates to a dismal 19% win percentage, while their 16 losses mean they lose an alarming 62% of the time. It’s a grim statistic, to say the least.

Why the Struggles?

So, what’s behind Villa’s struggles? For starters, 15 of their 26 Premier League Boxing Day fixtures (58%) have been against members of the so-called ‘Sky Six’ (even though that label didn’t exist in the 1990s). Such tough competition certainly doesn’t help.

Interestingly, Villa’s Boxing Day woes appear to be a Premier League phenomenon. Historically, they’ve fared much better on the date. Before the Premier League era, Villa weren’t half bad on Boxing Day, proving they haven’t always struggled digesting their Christmas turkey.

Aston Villa’s Complete Boxing Day Record

Boxing Day hasn’t always been bleak for Villa fans. As one of English football’s oldest clubs, Aston Villa have participated in more than their fair share of Boxing Day fixtures over the years. Historically, they’ve racked up an impressive 46 victories on December 26th, placing them second in all-time Boxing Day wins, behind only Manchester United, who lead with 53 wins.

Is it time to relabel the Premier League? Perhaps that’s the change Villa needs.

Aston Villa’s Boxing Day Red Card Record

Adding insult to injury, Jhon Durán’s red card against Newcastle United marked Villa’s fifth Boxing Day dismissal in the Premier League era -more than any other team. Previous red cards were handed to Andy Townsend (1994), Michael Oakes (1998), Zat Knight (2007), and Tyrone Mings (2020).

However, unlike Durán’s first-half dismissal that contributed to the 3-0 loss at Newcastle, Mings’ red card four years ago against Crystal Palace didn’t stop Villa from securing an emphatic 3-0 win.
