This latest incarnation of the Aston Villa team are marvellously creative in finding ways to lose games, with the defence excelling at gifting opponents with three points.

Probably the most memorable example being when Villa were 2-0 up with 18 minutes to play at Leicester, yet still managed to lose 3-2, with Guzan allowing a 5 ft 5 winger to out jump him to score the winner in the last-minute.

At Vicarage Road last weekend, Villa even topped that. 2-1 on 90 minutes, they still transpired to lose. This time the blame must go to Black, who wasn’t defensive enough after the team went down to 10 men – Bacuna switching to be in a central defensive three? Come on.

Anyway, enough of the latest Villa farce, here’s five reasons to be cheerful as Aston Villa fans.

3. Atonement

In terms of Aston Villa on the pitch, I think MOMS favourite moment of the season was the double solid tackle that wrongly saw Kevin Toner get sent off in a U21 game for Villa (the fight that broke out after wasn’t bad either). It was everything that has been lacking in the senior team.

There’s been a lot of over-hype about the latest Villa U21 team. The Birmingham Mail seem to be on a weekly crusade to hassle Eric Black into playing them instead of the seniors. The reality is they finished 4th out of 12 teams in Division Two of the U21’s. They are not world-beaters or a vintage Villa youth crop.

Having seen a couple of Villa U21 games in preseason, I remember feeling distinctly underwhelmed from what I saw in terms of many players making the jump to the senior team.

Toner and also Andre Green are the exceptions to the rule though. Toner gave a spirited performance against Watford, after starting in a centre-back trio. If only Richards had come on to play at right-back with Hutton switching to left-back, after Cissokho was sent off, then Toner might have had his first win as a starter. Instead, with Bacuna suddenly switching to play alongside him, the Villa backline once again folded.

It’s unlikely Toner will play in Villa U21’s promotion play-off final away at Arsenal next Tuesday at the Emirates, but lets hope the Villa youngsters manage to win without him.
