Aston Villa’s Europa League Squad
Aston Villa have confirmed the club’s squad list for the UEFA Europa League, which will contain 21 players in List A. The club were allowed an additional four ‘club-trained players’ in the list – who were registered with the club for at least three full seasons (or 36 months), between the ages of 15 and 21. Lamare Bogarde, who would have fitted the criteria, has instead included on List B, as he was born after January 1, 2004 (only by four days though, with his birthday on January 5).
Europa League Squad Fall Guy
After not being added to Villa’s Champions League squad last season for the knockout rounds, both Donyell Malen and Andrés García are included this time for the Europa League squad. One Villa player does miss out though, with Emery deciding to leave out Ross Barkley.
Last season, Barkley did manage six substitute appearances in the Champions League, and scored one goal, so he’ll be disappointed to miss out. However, his recent injury certainly did him no favours, when it came to the Villa manager’s decision.

Europa League List B
Villa will be able to include more players in List B, although, apart from Bogarde, they are very unlikely to feature in the tournament.
UEFA’s List B guidelines:
A player may be registered on List B if he is born on or after 1 January 2004 and has, since his 15th birthday, been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year. Players aged 16 may be registered on List B if they have been registered with the participating club for the previous two years without interruption.

Not really sure about the ‘List B players being very unlikely to feature’ comment, there are a few players like Jamal Jimoh, Brad Burrowes, Aidan Borland, Ben Broggio, George Hemmings, that are likely to make their European debuts, all of the aforementioned apart from Hemmings have already appeared at least once for the seniors competitively. Jimoh particularly has been given the #20 this season and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start some of the league phase games. We saw this in the Europa Conference season with Marschall, Revan, Munroe, Kellyman, and O’Reilly given debuts, so there is precedent from Emery to rest seniors.
A comment on Barkley, while he is lacking fitness and carrying small injuries, ultimately we are punished for having 0 homegrown players over 21.5; Jacob Ramsey, or Carney Chukwuemeka would have been ‘free additions’ if we hadn’t sold them for example. It shows that our youth development pathway still has a way to go despite huge success at U18 level last season, at least next year Bogarde will be able to take one of the 4 club-trained slots [if he’s still with us], taking our squad up to 22. Otherwise we can only increase our squad by re-signing our best graduates such as Grealish/Ramsey/Johansson/Chukwumeka.
In terms of List B players they’re unlikely to feature in any meaningful way. Yes, the missing out on the four extra places for homegrown players does highlight the current situation with the squad (not ideal either), but the comment on Barkley was within that context of not making one of the 21 spots he could have had.
