Aston Villa Squad Assessment – Who’s Underrated or Overrated

Aston Villa Squad Assessment – Who’s Underrated or Overrated

When you consider the players who played the most minutes for Aston Villa during the 2022/23 season and formed the foundation of the team’s successful journey into Europe, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings emerge as the top two. This fact speaks volumes about the club’s progression, as even these two dependable players now face competition for their positions. Not only is Diego Carlos back in shape and eager to make his mark, but there’s also a newcomer in town, none other than Pau Torres, who previously played as a center-back under Unai Emery at Villarreal. With over £60m worth of center-back talent nipping at their heels, Konsa and Mings are facing serious challenges.

Under Emery, Villa supporters saw a dramatic uplift in the performance levels by several key players such as the two aforementioned centre-backs, John McGinn, Douglas Luiz and Ollie Watkins. You get the feeling though, they’ll have to go up yet another level and stay consistent to remain prime movers in the Spaniards plans.

Underrated or Overrated?

With that in mind and with the transfer window in full swing, now is a good time to look at the current Aston Villa squad under Unai Emery and access them on the My Old Man Said podcast. For a bit of extra fun, we’ve done it in our tried and tested format of ‘underrated or overrated’. It’s not quite as binary as ‘good or bad’, or ‘positive or negative’.

Some players you’ll be able to second guess, but what about the likes of Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia? We go through everyone who played minutes for Villa last season, from the 10 minute man Morgan Sanson to Ezri Konsa, who featured in every Premier League game.
