Aston Villa Sign French Under-21 International Defender to set up Hutton’s Last Season

Right back in and out

After sending James Bree out on loan to Ipswich Town today, Aston Villa dropped serious hints to the future of the right-back position after announcing the signing of Frederic Guilbert from Caen for an undisclosed fee.

The defender will return to the Ligue 1 side on loan for the remainder of the 2018/19 season, giving him a chance to help Caen in their relegation battle this season (and brush up on his English).

Villa Head Coach Dean Smith had the dubious pleasure of seeing his transfer target sent off, when he went over to France to scout him.

A graduate of the youth academy at Caen, 24-year-old Guilbert has also played for AS Cherbourg and Bordeaux before returning to his first club.

He has also been capped internationally by France at U21 level and is very much seen by Smith as Villa’s future in the position.

Bye-bye Cafu

The signing seems to spell the end to Alan Hutton’s time at Aston Villa, with the Scottish Cafu’s contract up at the end of this season.

With Bree now gone for the rest of the season and the signings of Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause, to cover the left side of the defence with Neil Taylor, Hutton will now compete with Ahmed Elmohamady for the right-back spot in what seems to be his Villa swan song.

  1. Dissapointing window as far as I can see, what happened to the new LB everyone knows that’s probably our worst position, it’s just typical of our club to leave everything to the last second, so as I see it we have Mings which may help albeit he’s a CB, we’ve sent Hogan out on loan which is nuts given our striker position if Abraham’s gets injured were stuffed, cos at the moment Kodjia couldn’t hit a barn door lost a lot of confidence in Dean Smith now. And I can’t see any promotion prospects this season, probably not going to shell out to visit anymore just look at results on the box.
