The Super Cup Semi-final
It’s been a while since the Champions League final has had any direct connection or relevance to Aston Villa. Probably 44 years to be exact. But Villans will be casting an eagle eye on Saturday night’s final between PSG and Arsenal to find out who they will play in Villa’s next European fixture.
The Champions League final in Budapest has been billed by some Villa fans as simply the second semi-final for the UEFA Super Cup final, later in the year. The winner in Hungary’s capital will face Aston Villa at the Stadion Salzburg in Salzburg, Austria, on 12th August 2026, for the annual clash between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.
With Villa’s epic battle at Villa Park with PSG last season in the Champions League quarter-final, still fresh in the memory, most Villans will be seeking an opportunity to have another crack at Luis Enrique’s team. Ironically, if they had completed an incredible comeback against PSG, they would have played Arsenal in the semi-final. So, if Mikel Arteta’s team do triumph in Budapest, then Villans will get some kind of insight into whether they could have eventually made it the Champions League final last season.
Regardless of who they end up facing, it will be a great lead-in to another season of Champions League football for Unai Emery’s boys.
The UEFA Super Cup

The 2026 UEFA Super Cup will be held at Stadion Salzburg in Salzburg, Austria. It will be the first UEFA club final hosted there, although the venue hosted three games at UEFA EURO 2008. What is the Stadium Capacity?
The capacity of Stadion Salzburg is 30,188
Aston Villa’s Super Cup Ticket Allocation
60% of tickets will go to the competing teams and at least 20% will go on general sale via the UEFA portal, with the rest going to commercial partners to facilitate their staff, business partners and TikTok freeloaders.
Last season, for the host stadium Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy, which had a capacity of 22,500, 5,800 and 4,700 tickets were purchased by Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively.
So, if there’s demand, Villa should have access to circa 9,000 tickets.
Aston Villa’s Super Cup History
Villa triumphed in the 1983 Super Cup beating Barcelona 3-1 over two legs. After losing the first leg 1-0 in the Nou Camp, Gary Shaw scored in the second leg at Villa Park to put Villa on level terms with 10 minutes to go. The final was then decided in a stormy extra-time period. Villa scored two goals, before Barcelona, already down to 10 men, got another player sent off, before Alan Evans also walked after a second yellow card in extra-time. Villa won 3-0 on the night in front of an attendance of 31,570 in B6.
Villa have currently won the Super Cup the same number of times as Manchester City and Manchester United, with Arsenal never lifting it. So, to win in Salzburg would be fantastic in terms of further lifting the club’s prestige in Europe.
